Breast Cancer Breast Cancer Basics

In two-thirds of breast cancers, estrogen can stimulate growth of cancer cells.

Estrogen, and to a lesser extent progesterone, bind to specific tumors. When cancer cells are estrogen receptor positive, these hormones stimulate cancer growth. Physicians like to determine the cancer's estrogen and progesterone receptor status immediately to help them determine if anti-estrogen treatments will be effective.
