Colon Cancer Current Topics in Colon Cancer

An oral screening may be possible for one type of colon cancer.

Researchers have found that one type of colon cancer, hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), may change the color of a type of tissue found in the mouth. HNPCC is a genetically inherited form of colon cancer caused by genetic mutations that increase a person’s risk of developing colon cancer. The oral screening technique uses a special light that is reflected in a particular way when a patient has this genetic mutation. A study completed by Italian researchers, found that among 20 people at risk for this disease, all of them were accurately diagnosed with this technique. If further tests prove this screening technique to be just as accurate, it may represent an easy way for people to determine if they are at risk for HNPCC, the study authors write.
